How to play Nim

Make Nim your next activity in the game library. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Focus on one rule

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

If only one counter remains in one heap, taking it wins under the normal-play rule used here. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Keep the controls nearby.

Watch out for this

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Check the rule before repeating the action. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
