How to play Tangram

Tangram gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Use the example below to understand a decision. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

Read before acting

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Step by step

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

A useful example

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Look for the relevant detail.

Watch out for this

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Compare the situation with the worked example. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
