How to play Peg Solitaire

Bring your attention to one round of Peg Solitaire. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Look at what changes after your first action. Begin with the solo mode shown on the page. Use the example below to understand a decision.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

Keep the aim in sight

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. A new-round button replaces the current round.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Verify the rule before continuing.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Compare the situation with the worked example. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
